Product Barcodes

Congratulations! You have created a product. The next step is to get a barcode for your product. This is a fairly straightforward process, the details of which can be seen below.

1. Getting a Barcode

It is important to get a barcode if you want to sell in a variety of different retailers. This is because barcodes make the checkout process much easier for retailers. Hence they generally are much more willing to stock your product if it has a barcode on it.

There are a few questions that need answering in order to establish what exact type of retail barcode you will require. EAN-13 barcodes are used on the vast majority of products throughout the world. The exception to this is on books and magazines, which use ISBN and ISSN barcodes. EAN-13 barcodes are used predominantly everywhere in the world except for North America, where UPC-A Barcodes are more common. The differences between UPC-A and EAN-13 barcodes can be seen here.

2. Incorporating the barcode onto your product

Once you receive a barcode through our website, the next step is to incorporate it into your product packaging. This is fairly straightforward and simply involves picking whichever image format suits you best and incorporating it into your product packaging design in an easily visible flat location.

If you have already printed the product packaging and want to retrospectively barcode your product, the approach would be to get sticky barcode labels printed and stick them manually onto your product. You can order barcode labels here. These will be sent to your address in the UK or Ireland, at which point you can simply peel them off and stick them on your product line. Once this is done, the barcode will work in exactly the same way as if it were incorporated into the packaging.

3. Other stuff you may need

You may require barcode verification in a limited number of cases. This is a test scan of how easily the barcode scans in a variety of different scanning environments. You can see if you will require barcode verification on our barcode acceptance page. If you do require barcode verification, you can purchase this here.

We include barcode registration with our barcode packages. This is optional but can help increase the internet profile of your product. You can also purchase barcode registration here if you have a barcode you bought elsewhere.
