Note: We are happy to customize images by changing the barcode size and putting up to 2 lines of text above and below the barcode. In order to do this, we need all of the information up-front, preferably in a spreadsheet with fields for ‘Top line’, ‘Bottom line’ etc. Also let us know what font or size you require. If something is unspecified, we will create the barcode for the best possible printing and scanning at the required size.
Top 10 Tips for Barcode Images
1. Use High-Resolution Images (300–600 DPI)
Always use high-quality barcode images to ensure accurate scanning. Avoid blurry or low-resolution files.
2. Choose the Correct Format (EAN-13 or UPC-A)
Use EAN-13 for most global retail products, and UPC-A if you’re selling in the USA or Canada only.
3. Maintain Proper Dimensions
Follow the dimensions guidelines: keep barcode size within 80–200% magnification. Standard EAN-13 is ~38mm wide × 25mm tall.
4. Leave Quiet Zones (White Space)
Ensure there’s clear white space (minimum 2.5mm) on both sides of the barcode. This is vital for scanner recognition.
5. Print in Black on a Light Background
Use black bars on white or light-coloured backgrounds. Avoid red, metallics, or dark colours that scanners can’t read.
6. Test Scan Before Mass Printing
Always test your barcode on multiple scanners before final packaging or label printing.
7. Avoid Distortion or Stretching
Never resize barcodes by stretching or squashing. Scale proportionally to keep them readable.
8. Don’t Place Over Seams or Curves
Avoid placing barcodes on bottle curves, can seams, or folds. Scanners find it easier to barcodes on flat surfaces.
9. Keep Away from Busy Designs
Don’t embed barcodes into patterned or colourful backgrounds. Keep the area clean and minimal.
10. Include Human-Readable Numbers
Always show the barcode number below the image in a clear, legible font—retail staff may need to enter it manually.
