Nestled in the heart of Cooley, just outside Carlingford, Co. Louth, lies a family-run dairy farm that has been a staple in Muchgrange for four generations. The farm, renowned for its dedication to quality and tradition, is a cornerstone of the local community, providing fresh, premium dairy products directly to customers. Here the focus is on milking 120 pedigree Holstein Friesian cows, known for their superior milk quality.
Farm-Fresh Products
In a bid to bring their farm-fresh products closer to the consumers, the family has established a farm shop. Here, visitors can purchase milk in 1-litre or 500ml glass bottles, eggs, and queen potatoes. The farm promotes sustainability through a bottle return system. Customers are encouraged to bring back their glass bottles for refills, thus only paying for the milk on subsequent visits. Additionally, for those with a penchant for variety, the farm offers flavoured milk in eight different choices.
Central to the farm’s innovative approach is their in-house pasteurisation room. This facility allows for the gentle pasteurisation of milk, heating it to 72 degrees and then rapidly cooling it, a process that eliminates bacteria while ensuring the milk remains safe for consumption. What sets their milk apart is its non-homogenised nature, preserving the full fat content for a fresh, creamy taste unlike any other.
The farm also ventures into low-fat milk production, using a separator to divide the milk from the fat solids, which are then sold as cream, showcasing their commitment to utilizing every part of their produce.
A staunch advocate for environmental sustainability, the farm predominantly uses glass bottles for their dairy products, emphasizing reuse through a sterilization and refill system. This commitment to reducing waste is a testament to their dedication to environmental stewardship.
An innovative addition to their dairy range is the flavoured milk syrups, offering customers the joy of customizing their milk with eight different flavours, a result of meticulous selection to cater to diverse tastes.
